Beauty of Japan to the World:
Presenting Japanese Scents in New York City

In November 2015, a fashion show titled “Beyond KIMONO 2015” was held in New York City at the official residence of the Japanese Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations. The show was themed around “tradition and creation” and was presented by Be JAPON, a Japanese organization dedicated to sharing the beauty of Japan with the world. Guests were welcomed to the event with a Japan-inspired scent by Air Aroma.

Be JAPON unveiled a line of Japanese kimono dresses to lively music, dance and video clips showing the four seasons of Japan. To scent this Japan-themed event, Air Aroma selected the “Aomori Hiba Blend”, a deep, divine fragrance extracted from the famous hiba cypress tree in Aomori, known for bearing cold northern winds and growing sturdy over generations. Once considered a sacred tree, hiba has been used throughout history for shrines and traditional Japanese crafts.

With ambassadors and diplomats from approximately eighty countries in attendance, the intricacies of Japanese culture were presented as a sensory experience accompanied by piano and shakuhachi flute performances, as the gentle scent of hiba wafted through the venue.

The event featured antique kimonos from one hundred fifty years ago, reconstructed as contemporary Japanese-style dresses. The contrasting themes of “past and present”, and “tradition and creation” in Japanese culture were brought to life in the energetic and multicultural city of New York.

Following the show, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, Ambassador Yoshikawa commented: “The scents, costumes and music were exquisite, making this a compelling night for Japanese diplomacy.”
