東京・すみだ水族館で、日本初の特別展示として開催された「クラゲ万華鏡トンネル」が好評により、1月13日より常設展示化されました。
色鮮やかな照明に照らされた8つのクラゲ水槽が全長50メートルのスロープ両脇に設置され、壁と天井の3面には約5,000枚の鏡が敷き詰められています。三角形や四角形の鏡がキラキラと反射し、万華鏡と合わせ鏡の中を歩いているような体験ができる展示です。
1月13日より鏡の面積が40％拡大し、その空間にはエアアロマの香りが「異空間」を演出しています。
「以前は、お客さんが素通りしてしまう“水槽の並んだ通路”でした」と、案内して下さった恵土敦さん。現在はミラーボールが放つ光、心地良い音楽、そしてほのかな香りが、水中をふわふわと浮かぶクラゲの世界へ導いてくれます。
こちらでは「非現実的な空間」を香りで演出しながらも、全体的な心地よさの邪魔とならないフレグランスを選択しました。クラゲを鑑賞することによりストレスが低下すると言われていますが、この日も、多くのお客さんがじっと水槽を眺めていました。
クラゲは自分で泳ぐ力は弱く、水流にまかせて漂っているそうです。そのため水槽には柔らかい水流をつくる循環機能がついています。この日は偶然、夕方18時過ぎ、クラゲたちの食事の時間に訪れました。
水中に浮かぶ「粉のようなもの」＝動物性プランクトンをミズクラゲは無数の触手でとらえ、中央の口まで運ぶそうです。普段見ることのできない摩訶不思議な風景に来客者は足を止めます。水族館を訪れる時間帯により、「寝る準備をするペンギン」の姿など、動物たちの様々な表情を見ることができ、その生活に合わせて水族館が行う照明調整が見られるのも、そこが「生きている空間」だからこそ。
恵土さんのお話によると、すみだ水族館ではお子様のワークショップも頻繁に行われているため、地元の若いお母さんたちが集まり、カフェで談笑しながらお子様の遊ぶ姿を見守っていることもよくあるそうです。「観光のお客様ももちろんですが、地元の方にとって“憩いの場”」として楽しんで頂けるのは嬉しいです」と恵土さん。
すみだ水族館には、椅子がとても多く置かれています。それは、ひとりでもお気に入りの時間帯にカメラやノートを手に水族館でゆったりとした時間を過ごして頂きたい、という思いからだそうです。確かに、椅子に座ってじっと水槽を見つめている方を多く見かけました。（入場料二回分で年間パスが購入できます。）

The Sumida Aquarium is a beautifully designed aquarium located in the heart of Tokyo, on the 5th and 6th floors of the Tokyo Skytree Town that opened in May 2012. Tokyo Skytree is a 634-meter high television broadcasting tower and landmark of the city, surpassing Tokyo Tower as the tallest structure in the city.
As visitors step off the trains at Oshiage Station on the Asakusa Subway Line, they are greeted with a large billboard announcing the aquarium’s latest addition, the “Jellyfish Kaleidoscope Tunnel”. Launched as a holiday exhibition, the aquarium has announced the tunnel to become a permanent fixture beginning January 13th , due to popular demand.
The “tunnel” is a gentle 50-meter slope with eight jellyfish tanks on either side. With approximately 5,000 mirrors lining the walls and ceiling and a disco ball in center, visitors experience the sensation of being inside a kaleidoscope as they watch the jellyfish glide serenely in their tanks.
Adding to the otherworldly effect of the space is a subtle Air Aroma scent that soothes the viewers’ senses, encouraging them to stay and view the jellyfish as long as they wish.
Jellyfish are known to float along the water as they’re not able to swim for long periods of time, thus a gentle water current must be created inside the tank. On this day, we were lucky to encounter the feeding of the jellyfish, as they wafted to the right and left, collecting their food with their countless tentacles.
According to our guide and aquarium staff Atsushi Edo, visitors will find numerous chairs and benches placed throughout the aquarium to sit, reflect, draw, write, take photos…the list goes on. On this day too, we saw visitors quietly breathing in the sights of mystical marine life, from their favorite corners of the museum. (An annual pass is available for the cost of two regular admission tickets.)
A wonderful way to take a break from reality, right in the city’s center.
